Public Water Supply
The Hopi Tribe's Water Resources Program has been awarded the U.S. EPA Public Water Supply (PWS) Capacity Grant to begin the source water
protection program for the entire Hopi Tribe. The existing PWS's are
managed and operated by a multitude of entities. The PWS records are
incomplete and unconsolidated. For this reason, there is no central
depository of construction, operational, and compliance records for the
various water systems on the Hopi Reservation. The susceptibility of water
supply and delivery systems to contamination is unknown.
Pollutants of concern are petroleum hydrocarbons, radiological
contamination, salinity, cross-connections with wastewater, fecal coliform
bacteria and shigella, BTEX, MTBE, heavy metals and nitrates.
The PWS program will help all the Hopi Villages to maintain and protect
their groundwater source for the future. The Water Resources Program will
be working closely with all the Village Water Operators to ensure that all
pertinent information is collected and kept on file.
Information will be available to the Village Water Operators through a
Consumer Confidence Report at the conclusion of the program.
